City Breaks In Inverness and Things You Should Know

Inverness, frequently referred to as the capital of the Highlands of Scotland, was eventually granted city status in 2001 and at this moment in time is the only city in the Highlands of Scotland. Uniquely (in Britain) the city has no legal boundaries which can cause problems with population  estimation. The calculations are less likely to be accurate because of the fact that the incredibly high population growth rate, Inverness has the highest growth rate in the United Kingdom. One certainty we know of is that Inverness has a very content population, in 2008 Inverness was placed fifth in a survey taken, by the Telegraph.co.uk, of 189 UK cities for quality of life. Therefore we can state that Inverness is a pretty cool city in which to spend some time and this is most likely one of the facts which make the city incredibly popular with tourists. Crucially there is a great deal of bed & breakfasts in Inverness with the majority being bookable online.

Inverness is also often called the gateway to the Highlands for the obvious fact that it is the hub of the Highland public transport system and a large amount of visitor attractions are relatively easy to reach. Possibly the best way to see them is by going on a tour or day trip. There are a few companies visiting places such as, Loch Ness, Urquart Castle or Culloden or for the more hardy visitors you can to visit Orkney and John O’Groats on a days round trip. It is also possible to find a small number of city tours, such as those run by Tony Harmsworth or City Sightseeing.

A small number of visitors choose to stay in two places in the Highlands as an example Inverness then Fort William. Fort William is most popular with sports men and women especially rock climbers, ramblers and hill walkers who get excited climbing Ben Nevis which towers above the town’s center. In a similar fashion Fort William bed and breakfast and like most Scotland bed & breakfast it is often not too expensive, very good value for money and extremely comfortable, clean and tidy with world class hospitality.

One of the most important things to remember is that Inverness Airport is, near enough, seven miles away at Dalcross. You can catch a bus or hail a cab to the small but busy airport which is not very expensive. If you will benefit from using maps of the area then you will discover that they are free at the tourist office, on Castle Wynd in the town center. While you are taking a city break in Inverness you should make a point to visit the ’stone of tubs’ and Mercat Cross, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery and Inverness Castle especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, a fun interactive experience.
